Rustic Root opened in 2015 as a two-story restaurant on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter, and it works as both a weekend brunch spot and an evening room. The street-level dining room leans eclectic, with a ceiling of floating colanders and nature-inspired art on the walls, while the rooftop takes in the neighborhood among animal hedges, street lamps and fire pit tables.
The kitchen cooks New American comfort food: classic and regional dishes from around the country, reimagined with fresh, local ingredients. The 28-day dry-aged ribeye, a 16-ounce Creekstone Farms cut, is smoked at the table and served with mashed potatoes and sherry roasted onions. The Lobster Pappardelle comes in sherry cream with oven-roasted tomatoes and corn, and the Rustic Fried Chicken arrives with a butter biscuit, creamed corn and hot honey butter.
Each night has its own draw. Monday brings the Rustic Combo of a monthly burger, beer and fries, Tuesday runs happy hour at the bar until close, Wednesday pairs the fried chicken with Champagne, and Thursday brings martinis with live music all night. Everyday happy hour runs 5 to 6:30 PM on weekdays and 3 to 5 PM on weekends.
The doors open at 5 PM Monday through Friday and at 10 AM on Saturday and Sunday, when the rooftop brunch adds bottomless bubbles. Groups of 15 to 25 can book a large-party dinner in the main dining room online.
