Wood-fired Mediterranean cooking with a California ethos in Little Italy
Herb & Wood sits at 936 W Ivy Street in San Diego's Little Italy, a room built around rustic, wood-fired cooking that brings Mediterranean flavors and a California ethos of seasonality and sustainability to the plate. A grand central bar anchors the space beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling, the kitchen shows its work through storefront-style glass windows, and a courtyard with a two-sided fireplace works as both lounge and dining room.
Culinary Director Aidan Owens runs the kitchen. He grew up on a small farm outside Byron Bay, Australia, and cooked at Kettner Exchange, Fort Oak and Trust, and his cooking leans on whole-animal butchery, fermentation and close ties to local farms and independent fishermen. Herb & Wood is recommended in the MICHELIN Guide.
The wood-fired side of the menu shows early. Roasted Oysters and Bone Marrow arrive with charred lemon and horseradish butter on country wheat. Oxtail Gnocchi comes with roasted garlic, sherry, parsley and parmesan. Hamachi is dressed with schoug, amba and crispy shallots, and the Grilled Iberico Pork Secreto is served with apple mostarda, cannellini, pancetta and arugula.
Pizza is a real section here, including the Mushroom, topped with wild mushrooms, Humboldt Fog, melted leeks and lemon zest. Roasted Branzino comes with Castelvetrano olive tapenade and prosciutto, and a 14-ounce USDA Prime New York strip with caramelized onion jus holds its weight as the flagship cut. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 5 to 6pm.
