Lionfish opened in February 2017 as the seafood and sushi restaurant inside Pendry San Diego, at 435 Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. Chef JoJo Ruiz, a San Diego native who began his career as a sushi chef, built it around sustainable, locally sourced seafood, and Lionfish was named a James Beard Foundation Smart Catch Leader in 2019 and again in 2020. That focus shows across a menu that runs from clean-lined raw fish to unabashed luxury.
The Bonecrusha roll layers king crab, tuna toro, caviar, and bone marrow butter for a full-throttle indulgence, while the Big-Eye Tuna Pizza with truffle mustard and the king salmon sashimi with white truffle honey ponzu keep things lighter. The kitchen also pivots to unexpected territory: a half Peking duck with scallion pancake, swordfish al pastor off the robata, or a 36-ounce Black Opal wagyu tomahawk. The Choco Crumble Cake closes things out richly.
The two-level space pairs a lively dining room with a private dining area for groups, and the bar turns out hand-crafted cocktails built for the coastal menu. Happy hour runs Monday through Thursday from 5 to 6 PM, and Petco Park and the San Diego Convention Center are a short walk away.
Hours run Sunday through Thursday 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Friday and Saturday 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Dress is smart casual, in keeping with an upscale-yet-approachable room. Walk-ins are welcome when space allows, and reservations are recommended for weekends, holidays, conventions, and event nights.
