Mister A's has looked out over San Diego since 1965, from the 12th floor of the Manchester Financial Building in Bankers Hill. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping skyline views from the dining room, and the outdoor terrace adds upscale lounge seating. In the 1970s the restaurant arranged for Balboa Park's California Tower to be lit for its diners, and the tower has been lit every night since.
The history runs as deep as the elevation. The doors opened on May 17, 1965, and the restaurant marked its 50th anniversary in 2015. A 2022 renovation set out to bring original pieces back into the rooms, restoring the private Blue Room to its original style and giving the outdoor deck an expanded bar menu to match its new lounge seating.
Executive Chef Stephane Voitzwinkler leads a kitchen that leans on French technique and produce from local farms. Expect king salmon Wellington with foraged mushroom duxelles and bearnaise, roasted lamb loin with local farm ratatouille, Alaskan halibut Provencale, and Brandt Farm prime tenderloin or ribeye with bordelaise. The bar and lounge open at 3:30pm daily with aperitif specials and the same skyline behind them.
The room works for dinner nightly, lunch Wednesday through Friday, and weekend brunch, with live jazz on Saturdays. It has been the backdrop to thousands of San Diego marriage proposals. Business casual dress keeps it sharp, and valet parking is on the Fourth Avenue side of the building.
