Daily-changing seasonal American cooking in a converted Little Italy warehouse
Juniper & Ivy sits at 2228 Kettner Boulevard, in a once-abandoned warehouse on the northern edge of Little Italy. The kitchen calls its cooking refined American with a Left Coast edge. A big open kitchen anchors a warm, lively room that fills up fast; the bar seats are first-come, first-served if you prefer the spontaneous route, and there is also a chef's counter and a covered patio.
Executive Chef Alex Penkin cooks alongside Chef de Cuisine Khine Moore, and the menu rotates daily around what local farmers and fishermen bring in each morning, so it reads differently each night. Miso black cod with mushroom dashi, glazed shishito, and roasted shiitakes sounds restrained on paper and delivers something more complex. Rigatoni with pork bolognese, burrata, and basil is comfort done with precision.
On the protein side, the 22-ounce prime New York strip with togarashi aioli and king trumpet mushrooms makes the case for high-quality beef handled simply, and the whole fried seabass arrives with banchan and ssamjang, built for sharing. For dessert, the Gansito Yodel layers a chocolate shell, buttermilk cake, strawberry gel, and marshmallow snow.
Juni, the restaurant's playful bar concept, adds a casual lane of smaller bites: gnocco fritto, elote arancini, wagyu sliders, and tuna poke, opening the restaurant to a drop-in visit without a full dinner. Dinner is served nightly, Sunday through Thursday until nine and Friday and Saturday until ten, with valet parking available.
