San Diego Restaurant Week 2026: how to use it, and where to book anyway
San Diego Restaurant Week runs September 13 to 20, 2026. For eight days a large share of the city's restaurants put out fixed-price menus, and for eight days the city's reservation supply behaves as though it were a holiday weekend.
The promotion is genuinely good value at the mid-tier and it is the single best week of the year to try a room you have been putting off. It is also the week when the restaurants worth booking regardless become hardest to get into, whether or not they are participating.
Here is how to use the week properly.
How Restaurant Week actually works
Participating restaurants offer prix-fixe menus at set price tiers, usually a two-course lunch and a three-course dinner. The tiers scale with the restaurant, so a fixed price at a high-end room is a different number than at a neighborhood spot.
Two things people get wrong:
The participating list is published close to the event. Restaurants opt in each year and the roster is not final until shortly before. Do not build a trip around a specific room participating until it is confirmed.
Not participating does not mean not busy. The week drives dining traffic across the whole city. Rooms that sit out the promotion still fill, because everyone is out.
Where to book
La Jolla and the coast
George's at the Cove is the city's signature dining room and the view from Ocean Terrace is the reason. It is the most requested reservation in San Diego in any week, and during Restaurant Week the terrace goes first.
Catania is the coastal Italian counterpart a few streets away, and it is the easier of the two to get into without losing the ocean.
Little Italy and downtown
Herb & Wood is the room that changed the expectations for San Diego dining, and it is still the strongest all-round table in the city. Juniper & Ivy is the other, and its tasting-driven menu makes it the more adventurous choice.
Ironside Fish & Oyster is the seafood anchor of Little Italy and the best raw bar in the city. Water Grill downtown is the more classical version of the same idea.
Born N Raised is the steakhouse, and it does the full theatrical service. Cowboy Star in East Village is the quieter alternative with its own butcher shop attached.
The rest
Animae is the Asian-influenced fine-dining room and the most ambitious cooking downtown. Callie does Mediterranean and is one of the better-designed rooms in the city. Cucina Urbana in Bankers Hill is the reliable neighborhood Italian, and Trust in Hillcrest is the one locals name when asked.
After dinner
Restaurant Week is a dining promotion, but the week drives enough traffic downtown that the bars and clubs run busy alongside it, particularly the weekend in the middle.
Altitude Sky Lounge is the rooftop above the Marriott in the Gaslamp and the easiest first stop from any downtown dinner. Parq and Onyx Room are the two Gaslamp rooms that carry a proper late night, and Nova and Side bar are the smaller alternatives.
If the trip runs into the weekend and the weather holds, Pool House and Float both run daytime programming. Mid-September is still comfortably pool weather in San Diego.
Making the week work for you
- Book lunch. Restaurant Week lunch menus are better value than dinner and lunch availability is far better. It is the most underused part of the promotion.
- Go early in the week. Sunday through Wednesday is materially easier than Thursday through Saturday, and the menus are identical.
- Do not chase the discount at the top end. At the highest tier the fixed price is close enough to a regular meal that you are better off booking what you actually want.
- Book the non-participants too. If the room you want sits out, that is an argument for booking it, not against.
When to come instead
If flexibility matters more than the promotion, mid-September in San Diego is excellent regardless. The summer crowds have gone, the weather holds through October, and the ocean is at its warmest of the year.
