Cucina Urbana has anchored Bankers Hill since 2009, San Diego's original retail-wine-shop-inside-a-restaurant. Tracy Borkum opened it in the depths of the 2008 recession, reinventing her fine-dining room Laurel into a California-inspired Italian kitchen, and it became the flagship of her Urban Kitchen Group. The room reads like a modern farmhouse: high ceilings, walls of windows, wrought-iron shelving, rustic wood and bold abstract canvases over a mix of bar stools and tables for two to four, lively without being loud.
