Cucina Urbana has anchored Bankers Hill since 2009, and we send guests here when they want San Diego's original retail-wine-shop-inside-a-restaurant done with warmth rather than fuss. Tracy Borkum opened it in the depths of the 2008 recession by reinventing her fine-dining room Laurel into a California-inspired Italian kitchen, and it became the flagship of her Urban Kitchen Group. The room reads like a modern farmhouse: high ceilings, walls of windows, wrought-iron shelving, rustic wood, and bold abstract canvases over a mix of bar stools and tables for two to four. It is lively without being loud, polished without being precious, the kind of place that works for a date, a birthday, or a long table of friends.
