Farm-to-table coastal California cooking on the bay at Seaport Village
Malibu Farm sits at the edge of San Diego Bay inside Seaport Village, a two-story indoor-outdoor space where the light shifts across the water all day. It opened in September 2023 in the former Harbor House space, a Seaport Village dining landmark since 1980, and it is the largest Malibu Farm outpost.
Helene Henderson, the founder and chef, started Malibu Farm in 2008 with cooking classes and farm dinners at her home, then opened a small counter-service cafe at the end of the Malibu Pier in 2013. Her approach is simply prepared food with lots of vegetables and fruit, mostly whole grains, no fake food, and sustainable seafood.
The menu is coastal California comfort food: cauliflower-crust pizza with basil pesto and heirloom tomatoes, nachos with black bean vegan chorizo, stoplight tacos, coconut ceviche with local fish, and lobster mac and cheese at dinner. Brunch brings Swedish mini pancakes and surfers rancheros, and a full cocktail and wine list pairs as well with a midday meal as with a relaxed evening by the water. On-site, an ice cream and espresso bar and a curated home goods boutique make the complex easy to spend an afternoon in.
The day here is flexible. The coffee shop opens at 8am, the restaurant serves from 9am to 9pm daily, and brunch runs until 3pm on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are available for dinner after 4:30pm, as the waterfront lights come up and the dining room settles into something worth lingering in.
