Oceanfront fine dining since 1941, waves at the windows
The Marine Room sits on the La Jolla shoreline at 1950 Spindrift Drive, where picture windows frame the Pacific and, on the right tide, waves crash just beyond the glass and fill your whole field of vision. Its position on the beach is the entire point, and it has drawn residents, travelers and celebrities to dine beside the sea since it opened in 1941.
The kitchen works a seasonal coastal California menu built around fresh seafood. The raw bar opens with a Peruvian crudo of local bluefin tuna in aji amarillo agua chile, ocean trout toro tartare with trout roe and yuzu pearls, and West Coast oysters with tequila mignonette. Thai curry soup comes with blue swimmer crab and green mango, and caviar arrives as a single Kaluga bite or a full traditional service with blinis.
From the sea come swordfish au poivre, pistachio-crusted seabass, Tasmanian ocean trout and butter-poached lobster; from the land, Japanese A5 wagyu, an 8-ounce filet mignon and rosemary-crusted Colorado lamb chops. A rotating list of chef specials follows the season, and the dress code is business California casual.
High Tide Dinners open the room on select dates when the ocean rises to meet the windows, with reservation-only seating and special menus. The Lounge runs its own menu, separate from the dining room. Window tables can be requested when booking, and the restaurant does its best to accommodate them.
