Ippei Matsumoto's 14-seat French restaurant in Nihonbashi Muromachi, opened in 2014
La Paix is chef Ippei Matsumoto's French restaurant, a basement room at 1-9-4 Nihonbashi Muromachi on a side street off Chuo-dori, a short walk from Mitsukoshimae Station. Matsumoto, born in Wakayama in 1974, trained at Vincent in Roppongi and in Namur, Belgium, then led the kitchen at Au Gout du Jour Merveille in Nihonbashi before opening La Paix in 2014. It holds one MICHELIN star in the MICHELIN Guide Tokyo 2026.
The name is French for peace. The room is kept small on purpose, 14 seats sized so the staff can keep every table in view, with a semi-private room for four to eight guests. Manager Tomohito Tanaka, a former hotel sommelier, has run the floor since the restaurant opened.
Lunch and dinner are both omakase courses, from around six plates at lunch to around twelve at the special dinner, built on produce sent by growers across Japan. The restaurant describes its cooking as French with a Japanese sense of season, joining the lightness of modern cooking to the history of the classics. The menu changes daily: sample menus run from boudin noir and sea urchin through conger eel and tilefish to a wagyu fillet, one course can take a roast of Tokachi herb beef as its main, and buckwheat tea arrives before dessert.
Lunch is seated from 11:30am to noon and dinner from 6pm to 7pm, every day except Tuesday, with a few further closures each month. Smart casual dress is recommended.
