Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu · Restaurant · Tokyo

A two-floor Japanese restaurant at the Nishi-Azabu crossing, open since 2001 and serving until 3:30 in the morning.
Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu is a Japanese restaurant on the first and second floors of 1-13-11 Nishi-Azabu, on the corner of the Nishi-Azabu crossing, about ten minutes on foot from Roppongi, Nogizaka and Hiroo stations. Opened in 2001, it became known worldwide as the setting of the izakaya summit between former US President Bush and former Prime Minister Koizumi, and as the model for a scene in Quentin Tarantino's 2004 film Kill Bill.
The interior is built on a dramatic scale to recall the Japan of an earlier era, spread over two floors with counter seats, tables and private rooms. It seats 260 guests, and up to 204 when the whole restaurant is hired out for a party.
Soba is a house specialty: domestic buckwheat is stone-ground every morning and the noodles are made by hand. Skewers are grilled over binchotan charcoal, from chicken thigh and the signature tsukune meatball, with a poached egg on request, to beef tongue with spring onion, and tempura comes straight from the fryer, including a five-piece shrimp plate. The dashimaki rolled omelet, homemade cold tofu and a gyoza-style Gonpachi pizza fill out the menu, and vegan and halal courses are offered.
Gonpachi opens every day at 11:30, serves lunch until 15:00 and stays open until 3:30 in the morning, with last food orders at 2:45, which makes it a late table after a night in Roppongi.
