Roka Mayfair is the third of Rainer Becker's four London robatayaki rooms, opened in 2014 on North Audley Street, minutes from the shopping stretch of Oxford Street. Becker opened the first Roka on Charlotte Street in 2004, following Zuma London, and added Canary Wharf in 2009 before Mayfair and Aldwych both arrived in 2014.
The room is built around the robata grill that anchors every Roka. The format takes its cue from the fishermen of Japan's northern coastal waters, who grilled their catch over charcoal on the boat and passed it around on their oars, and the dishes follow that logic: they are meant to be shared. The menu runs through robata plates and Japanese small plates alongside sushi and sashimi, with a 350-gram rib eye in Japanese pepper miso, chicken karaage with chili sauce and garlic soy, octopus skewers with confit garlic and lime, snow crab and shiso tempura with roasted garlic sauce, and thin-sliced sea bream with smoked soy and yuzu.
Lunch and dinner run daily from noon to 10:30 p.m., and the terrace serves all day from noon. Teishoku set menus are available Monday through Friday from noon, and the bar runs a happy hour Monday through Friday between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The restaurant takes group bookings.
