Peter Luger Steak House has stood at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn since 1887, when it opened as Carl Luger's Cafe, Billiards and Bowling Alley in what was then a largely German neighborhood. The kitchen still revolves around one thing: USDA Prime beef, hand-selected and dry-aged on site before it goes under the broiler. It is loud, warm, and thoroughly Brooklyn, a room built for a long, generous dinner.
The headline is the dry-aged steak for two, three, or four, or a single steak for one. Start with Luger's sizzling bacon, extra thick by the slice, and the iceberg wedge, or the sliced tomatoes and onions with Luger's own sauce, then round the steak out with Luger's Special German fried potatoes and creamed spinach. Desserts come with homemade schlag, from cheesecake to the Holy Cow hot fudge sundae. At lunch, the Luger-Burger, over half a pound on a bun, is served daily until 3:45 PM.
