Scarpetta on Madison Avenue is the room the name comes from, now in the Hotel Seville in NoMad. If you have eaten the spaghetti with tomato and basil anywhere else with this name on the door, this is where it started, and it is still the dish people order before they have opened the menu.
The cooking is Italian played for depth rather than novelty: handmade pasta, a short list of things done properly, and a dining room that runs formal without being stiff. It takes lunch as seriously as dinner, which in this part of Manhattan is rarer than it should be.
Lunch runs Monday to Friday from 11:30, and dinner every night except Saturday lunch. Sundays and Mondays close at 9pm, so a late table needs a Tuesday or later.
