Lumi crowns the rooftop of the former Grand Pacific Hotel on Fifth Avenue, a 5,000-square-foot perch above the Gaslamp Quarter where the downtown skyline does most of the decorating. This is the San Diego address of Akira Back, the Korea-born, Aspen-raised former pro snowboarder who traded the halfpipe for the line under Nobu Matsuhisa and now runs a global portfolio of namesake rooms, with Michelin recognition for his Dosa concept in Seoul and London. Back conceived the menu here; day to day the kitchen has been led by Nobu-trained executive talent, and the cooking carries his signature Nikkei-meets-Korean point of view across sushi, robata and raw bar.
