Lumi crowns the rooftop of the historic Grand Pacific Building on Fifth Avenue, high above Huntress steakhouse in the Gaslamp Quarter, where the downtown skyline does most of the decorating. It is the San Diego address of Akira Back, the chef behind Yellowtail at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, whose namesake restaurants reach from Dubai and Toronto to Singapore and Seoul.
Back created the menu here, carrying his Nikkei-influenced point of view and local ingredients across sushi, robata, and raw fish. The dish that travels with his name leads the order: the Akira Back Pizza, layered with tuna, ponzu mayo, serrano, red onion, micro shiso, and a whisper of truffle oil.
Beyond it: yellowtail serrano with pickled fresno and ginger soy, rock shrimp tempura, baby back ribs with rocoto aioli, robatayaki skewer flights straight off the coals, and a deep nigiri and sashimi list that runs to bluefin otoro. Worth asking about is the Nazo 9, Lumi's signature mystery box, unveiled with a tableside presentation nightly while supplies last. The bar pours a long sake list, including Back's signature sake served only at Lumi, and Toki highballs from a Japanese highball machine.
As the evening turns, the rooftop fire pits glow, the DJ comes on, and the two large rooftop bars fill. Lumi opens daily at 5:30pm, happy hour runs Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30pm, and dress is upscale casual.
