Wagyu teppanyaki in a rebuilt Kanazawa merchant house on the fifth floor of Omotesando GYRE
Omotesando Ukai-tei is a teppanyaki restaurant on the fifth floor of Omotesando GYRE, at 5-10-1 Jingumae, looking down over the zelkova trees of Omotesando avenue. Chefs cook Japanese Black beef and seasonal seafood on the griddle in front of each guest, in a style rooted in French cooking.
The dining room is built from a merchant house of about 150 years old, moved from Kanazawa and reassembled, with lacquered beams and pillars, walls of bengara red plaster and a mosaic wall. Art Deco furnishings, works by Rene Lalique and antique perfume bottles fill the space. The circular counter carries a seigaiha wave mosaic, the private rooms are painted with frescoes of morning glories and grapes, and the glass-walled counter seats look out over Omotesando. Dessert and coffee follow in an Art Nouveau lounge lined with windows over the city.
Courses center on Ukai Selected Beef, Japanese Black wagyu chosen by the house and served as sirloin or tenderloin. Lunch pairs the steak with teppanyaki lobster or abalone, and the Seasonal and Abalone course sets several appetizers, griddled abalone and sirloin in one sitting.
Lunch starts at noon on weekdays and 11:30 am on weekends and holidays, with last orders at 1:30 pm, and dinner runs from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm with last orders at 8:00 pm. The restaurant closes on Wednesdays and on two Tuesdays a month. Courses are served for a minimum of two guests.
