MoMA's two-star dining room worth a standalone Midtown evening.
The Modern is the two-Michelin-star restaurant inside the Museum of Modern Art, with a street-level entrance at 9 West 53rd Street. The main dining room overlooks the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, the livelier Bar Room takes a more relaxed a la carte approach, and The Kitchen Table seats up to four guests inside the kitchen. Since opening in 2005 the restaurant has drawn both Michelin and James Beard recognition.
Executive chef Thomas Allan runs a refined contemporary American kitchen. Dinner in the dining room is a choice of two tasting menus that change often: Impressions at $185 and the longer Abstractions at $285, with a recent sampling that included tuna with radish and shiso, Hokkaido scallop with 'nduja, and dry-aged duck with chanterelles. Lunch adds a three-course prix fixe at $115. In the Bar Room, the crispy fried chicken is the signature. Wine director Jan Van Heesvelde oversees a list of about 3,000 selections, and the cocktails include the Modern Martini.
The rooms were designed by the New York firm Bentel & Bentel as an escape from the Midtown bustle outside, and the dining room rewards a full, unhurried evening.
Lunch is served daily from noon to 2:30 PM, and dinner from 5:00 PM, running to 9:00 PM Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. The Bar Room opens daily at 11:30 AM and takes walk-ins. Reservations for The Modern open 28 days ahead at noon ET.
