NAO Restaurante Mediterraneo is a Michelin Guide Recommended kitchen in the historic downtown of San Jose del Cabo. Local chef Alex Branch works a Mediterranean, Persian, and Middle Eastern proposal, reworked with Baja California ingredients and techniques.
Branch is a Los Cabos veteran. He started in Mexico City under chef Monica Patino, helped open the Capella Pedregal resort that is now the Waldorf Astoria, cooked at Manta by Enrique Olvera, and was executive sous chef at One and Only Palmilla before landing his own room here.
Nearly everything arrives made in house, from the bread and pasta to the gelato. That discipline lands on the plate: house-made tortellini with cacio e pepe and shrimp, grilled Mediterranean octopus, and a yogurt gelato finished with crumbled baklava. Mediterranean ideas, personal rather than borrowed.
The room is elegant and intimate, dressed in whitewashed brick with cool blue accents. It sits in the walkable Centro Historico, minutes from Plaza Mijares and the galleries of the Thursday night Art Walk.
Recently relocated from its original home in the El Merkado food hall, NAO now anchors the Centro art district. Dinner runs from 5:00 PM to about 9:45 PM, and the kitchen is closed on Tuesdays.
