For one week in October, Cabo San Lucas stops being a beach destination and becomes a
tournament town. Bisbee's Black and Blue is the largest marlin tournament in the world by
purse, the marina fills with sportfishing boats that cost more than most houses, and the
town's restaurants run at a different rhythm than they do in high season.

two together are what people mean when they say billfish season.
The reason it matters for anyone not fishing: the crowd it brings.
Why this week books differently
A tournament week is not a holiday week, and it does not behave like one.
The boats leave before dawn and return mid-afternoon. That empties the restaurants at
breakfast and lunch and compresses everything into two windows: a hard 4pm to 7pm block
when the weigh-ins finish and the marina fills, and a late dinner service that runs
well past what Cabo usually sustains in October.
The spend profile is the other difference. Entry fees run into six figures for the top
calcuttas, and the teams that pay them are travelling with owners, guests and crew. Groups
of eight to sixteen are normal. Private dining rooms and full-restaurant buyouts get taken
weeks out, which is unusual for October, and the marina-side rooms go first.
October is otherwise Cabo's shoulder month. That gap between a quiet town and a very busy
marina is what makes the week worth planning rather than improvising.
The marina, which is where the week actually happens
Weigh-ins run at the Puerto Paraiso marina and the crowd does not travel far afterwards.
Nicksan has been doing Japanese-Mexican by the marina
since 1994 and is the obvious answer for a boat that has just landed a fish. It is close,
it is fast if you go early, and the raw bar is the right food after a day at sea.
Romeo y Julieta is the marina-district Italian
that has outlasted almost everything around it, and it takes a large table more gracefully
than most rooms in the area.
Maria Corona does scratch mole and tableside
guacamole a short walk in from the water, and works when the group is mixed and nobody
wants to negotiate a tasting menu.
The tables worth the drive
If you are not tied to the marina, the better rooms are along the Corridor and up in the
Pedregal.
El Farallon is carved into the cliffs at Waldorf
Astoria Pedregal, the catch is chosen from ice at the table, and the timing works with the
tournament rather than against it: aim for about an hour before sunset.
Sunset Monalisa has the front-row view of El
Arco and is the single most requested dinner in Cabo during any high-demand week.
Cocina del Mar at Esperanza sits above private
coves on the Corridor, and Manta is Enrique Olvera's
oceanfront room at The Cape, which is the more contemporary Mexican answer.
Flora's Field Kitchen is inland in San Jose, on a
working organic farm, and is the one dinner in Los Cabos that reads as a day out rather
than a restaurant booking. Groups do it as a lunch on a lay day.
For a straight steak and raw bar after a week of eating fish,
Harry's on the Corridor is the answer, and
Cocina de Autor at Solaz holds the only
Michelin star in Los Cabos if the week calls for a tasting menu.
After the weigh-in
Tournament nights run late and they run loud.
Mandala is the marquee bottle-service room downtown and
the one that handles a crew of fourteen without improvising.
Cabo Wabo is the rock cantina with live music most
nights, which is a better fit for a mixed group than a table at a nightclub.
Rosa Negra and
Chambao both run dinner into a show, which is the format
most tournament groups actually want: one room, one bill, four hours.
Lay days, which are the part people forget
Tournaments have days where nobody fishes, and those days need a plan.
SUR Beach House and
Tamara Beach Club are on Medano, which is the
swimmable beach, and both take a large group for the day.
Corazon is the more polished version of the
same idea. The Office on the Beach is
the toes-in-the-sand lunch that has been there longer than any of them.
How to plan the week
Book the 4pm to 7pm block first. That is the weigh-in window and it is the hardest table
of the day, which is the opposite of a normal Cabo week.
Give a real headcount early. A group of sixteen is routine during Bisbee's and impossible
to place at short notice, because the rooms that take sixteen are the rooms every other
team is calling.
Hold one lay day open. The fishing schedule moves with the weather, and a dinner booked
against a day that turns into a fishing day is a dinner nobody attends.
