Cannes 2026: how the season closes, and the one town on this coast that does not shut
Cannes is the exception on the Cote d'Azur. Saint-Tropez empties in October and Mykonos closes outright, but Cannes is a working city of seventy thousand people with a year-round restaurant scene, a conference calendar that runs through winter, and an airport twenty minutes away.
What closes in Cannes is the beach layer, not the town. Understanding that distinction is the whole point of planning a late trip here.
The two Cannes
The Croisette beach clubs are seasonal. They are built on concessions along the public beach, they run roughly from spring through early October, and then they are dismantled. This is the Cannes of the postcards and it has a hard end date.
The town does not stop. The restaurants in the center, the Suquet, and along the port run year-round, and the nightlife holds on well past the beach season.
Most visitors only ever experience the first one, and assume that when it closes, Cannes closes. It does not.
The Regates Royales: the real season finale
Cannes ends its summer the same way Saint-Tropez does, with classic yachts. The Regates Royales bring a fleet of vintage and classic boats to race off the bay in late September, and it is the best week of the shoulder season to be here: the summer crowds are gone, the weather is still warm, and the bay is full of the most beautiful boats on the coast.
La Guerite on the Ile Sainte-Marguerite is the position for it. The island sits directly off Cannes in the racing water, and the boat over is part of the day. It is also one of the harder reservations of the season for exactly that reason.
When the beach clubs close
The Croisette row winds down through late September and into the first days of October, with the hotel-operated clubs generally running latest because they are supported by the hotels behind them.
Carlton Beach Club and La Plage Du Martinez are the two anchors, both attached to their respective hotels on the Croisette. Miramar Plage, Annex Beach, and Copal Beach run the same seasonal calendar.
Nammos and La Mome Plage are the two that most closely resemble the Saint-Tropez model, and they close on a similar schedule.
Exact closing dates vary with the weather and are usually confirmed only a few weeks ahead. If a specific club matters to your trip, we will confirm before you commit to dates.
What runs through the autumn
This is where Cannes separates from the rest of the coast.
Le Baoli and Baoli at Port Canto run well beyond the beach season and are the center of Cannes nightlife once the Croisette has packed up. Zuma, Medusa, La Petite Maison, Anna, and La Mome are town restaurants rather than beach operations, and they run through the autumn and winter.
So a late-October trip to Cannes is a genuine option in a way that a late-October trip to Saint-Tropez is not. You lose the beach clubs and keep the city.
Why the shoulder season works here specifically
Cannes has a structural advantage over the rest of the coast: it is built around a convention center, not around a beach. The Palais des Festivals runs a calendar of trade fairs and congresses from autumn through spring, which means the hotels stay open, the restaurants stay staffed, and the city keeps functioning at a level that a pure resort town cannot sustain out of season.
The practical benefit for a visitor is that autumn in Cannes is not a compromise. You get full service in the town's best rooms, at an hour of your choosing, at prices that are not August prices.
It also means the calendar is not empty. Business travel keeps the good tables occupied midweek through the autumn, so "quiet season" does not mean "walk in anywhere." It means the competition shifts from holidaymakers to delegates, and the booking pattern changes rather than disappears.
What to do when the beach is gone
The Suquet, the old town on the hill above the port, is the part of Cannes that most summer visitors never reach because they never leave the Croisette. It is at its best in autumn, when the narrow streets are walkable and the restaurants are not turning tables at speed.
The Iles de Lerins, the two islands off the bay, run boats year-round. Sainte-Marguerite is the larger and the one with La Guerite on it; Saint-Honorat is a working monastery that produces its own wine. Both are better in October than in August for the obvious reason.
And the Croisette itself is a genuinely good walk once the beach clubs have been dismantled and the promenade belongs to the city again.
How to time it
- September: the best month. Beach clubs open, crowds thinned, sea warm, prices softer.
- Late September: the Regates Royales. The shoulder-season peak.
- October: the beach row closes progressively. The town, the restaurants, and Baoli continue.
- November through spring: no beach season, but a fully functioning city. Worth it for dining, not for sun.
