Sartiano's is a glamorous Italian-American room inside The Mercer, on the corner of Prince and Mercer in SoHo. The dining room is as much a scene as a meal, and a well-timed reservation is part of the point.
It occupies the former Mercer Kitchen space, redrawn by Studio Sofield to feel like a moody Tuscan wine cellar dressed for a downtown crowd: exposed brick, a Carrara marble bar, leather Hollywood-style banquettes, a long communal table, and an open kitchen. There are two moods under one roof, a relaxed upstairs cafe off the lobby and the more elevated main dining room downstairs, where the evening centers.
The kitchen, under three-time James Beard Award winner and culinary director Alfred Portale, reworks Italian-American classics with a fine-dining hand. Pastas include lobster bucatini with Calabrian chili butter, a wild mushroom and black truffle lasagna, and fusilli with Wagyu beef ragu. From the raw bar, the caviar cannoli and hamachi crudo are the reliable openers. Mains run to Dover sole with lemon-caper brown butter and a veal chop Parmigiana, with a 40-ounce prime tomahawk ribeye anchoring the top of the menu.
The dining room serves lunch Monday to Friday 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM, brunch Saturday and Sunday 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and dinner Monday to Saturday 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM and Sunday 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, while the cafe opens daily at 7:00 AM for breakfast. Reservations run through SevenRooms.
