Nobu Los Angeles sits on North La Cienega in West Hollywood, on the restaurant row rather than the coast, and it is deliberately a city room - lower, darker and more enclosed than the Malibu house up the highway.
The design leans on timber slats, woven lanterns and a long sushi counter running the length of the main room. There is a terrace off the side that works for a warmer evening, and two private rooms behind it, one of them built around a single long table for a group that wants the door shut.
The cooking is the canon rather than a local reinterpretation: black cod in miso, yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno, rock shrimp tempura, and the sushi programme that the counter exists for. Ordering the signatures is the right move here, not the obvious one.
It runs dinner only, from half five, and it is a booking rather than a walk-in through the week. For a group it is the more practical of the two LA rooms - Malibu is a drive and an occasion; this one is fifteen minutes from most of the city.
